The Substance Use Research Unit (SURU) and other researchers in the Center for Public Health Research work on a variety of projects with the goal of improving health in San Francisco. SURU investigates pharmacologic and behavioral interventions to maximize the health outcomes of people who use alcohol, methamphetamine, opioids, and other drugs, including the reduction of HIV transmission;  conducts observational studies of patients with chronic pain and opioid use; and studies substance use-related morbidity and mortality. This work complements other HIV activities at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and benefits our community by generating new prevention strategies tailored to the local epidemic.
